Scripture: Judges 6-8, Psalm 72

When the Angel of God visited Gideon and said, “God is with you, O Warrior,” Gideon found these words hard to believe because he and his people had become enslaved by the Midianites.

“If God is with us, then why has He allowed these things to happen,” Gideon questioned. God’s answer reminded Gideon of former victories. He also reminded him that because of disobedience the Israelites were allowed to be overtaken. Yet, in their failure to obey, God was still there. He instructed Gideon, “Go in this strength that is yours…haven’t I sent you?” (Judges 6:14 Message)

Once more Gideon questioned, “How, when I am the runt of the litter?” Once more God assured him that He would be with him. Filled with doubt, Gideon asked for a sign. Ever patient, God conceded. When God told Gideon to tear down the Baal altar and erect God’s altar, Gideon feared the people’s reactions and secretly, but obediently, tore down the evil structure. When Gideon asked again for a sign from God assuring victory, God once more honored Gideon’s request. Empowered by God’s assurance, patience, and faithfulness, Gideon went on to defeat the Midianites and restore peace to Israel.

Prayer: Patient Father, despite our doubts, let us believe what you say about us. Remind us to go in the strength that is ours.
