Scripture: 1 Kings 17-19, Psalm 99

The Psalm in this reading reminds us that even in the turmoil God is on the throne and has power over all the nations. With all of the crazy and hard to fathom things happening in our world today, it is easy to look to our worldly leaders to save us, but God is the only one who can be fully just and right. God provides for those who are in need and call on the name of the Lord, as shown through the never ending flour and oil of the widow and the    sustenance provided to Elijah in the wilderness. The Lord is worthy of worship because of God’s holiness and forgiving nature.

GodStory, that the Lord has a heart for justice in the world, shows us how to live OurStory. We have to take care of the widows and orphans and the marginalized. We have to stand up for the Holy Justice that God shows us because if we just sit and watch the  injustice, we are a participant in that marginalization and hurt. In this time, that looks like lending your God-given voice to people who don’t have a voice that will be heard. It looks like loving and taking care of those in your community that don’t have people or laws to protect them.

Let’s pray together for justice and guidance on practical things we can do:

Lord, we know that you hear our prayers even when thousands of people are talking to you at the same time. We thank you that you are just even when we and our leaders fall short. Remind us that you are Lord, not the humans on the worldly thrones. Help us love those  around us who are marginalized and lead us to those you want us to take care of. We love you Lord. Amen.
