Scripture: 1 Samuel 28-31, Psalm 86

“When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.” 1 Sam 31:7 (NIV).

GodStory:

In scripture, one can find blessings and descriptions of events that exemplify how we are to live. Reading about the end of Saul’s life, we see an end that does not bring joy and peace. It isn't easy to read. Saul’s life ends, sadly, as one of progressive disobedience. Not only that, but his life of disobedience profoundly affected those closest to him. His sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua also fell at the hands of the Philistines. Jonathan was one of David’s best friends, and his death affected him greatly.

OurStory:

We must remember that when we are disobedient and step outside God’s will, that will negatively affect those around us. The opposite is true as well. When we live a life that is obedient to the Word and reflects Jesus, we are a blessing to those around us.

Prayer:

Lord, help us live according to your Word. As we read through it this year, allow us to hide it in our hearts. When the temptations of this world seek to draw us into disobedience, may we recall your Word and use it as a defense against the schemes of the enemy.
