Scripture: 2 Samuel 9-12, Psalm 89

In today’s reading, we encounter King David requesting information regarding King Saul’s family.   Saul has been   defeated and David is now the reigning king. Jewish tradition suggests that David would execute anyone from the remaining bloodline to secure his kingship permanently.  David chose a different path and restored Saul’s grandson, Mephibosheth, to a position of honor and safety.  Mephibosheth was no longer an outcast.  David’s invitation was: Come sit at my table and be part of my family!

The word that comes to my mind is GRACE.  A few days ago, I was speaking with one of my students about a poor choice that he had made.  Another student happened to be listening in and told the student, “You know, Mrs. Stark is giving you grace.”  It froze me in the moment as I realized how often God allows me to be in a position to extend grace.  Do I miss it?

Prayer:  God, allow me to see each person that I come in contact with as a person who needs grace, just like I do.  Help me to see their hurts, misunderstandings, and limitations before I respond.

Household challenge:

Younger children:  Play Candyland or another simple game.  Practice using language like, “You can go first and I’ll go last.”  “It’s okay if you win.  I’ll be happy for you.”  Learn to lose gracefully.

Older children:  Think of someone who has been difficult to be around lately.  Think of a tangible way you can extend grace to that person, like inviting them to a party, baking cookies, or sending a note of encouragement.
